Mt Jagged Wines is located in the Southern Fleurieu (just South of McLaren Vale) on the main Victor Harbor road, 8kms South of Mt Compass & South East of Mt Jagged in South Australia. The Southern Fleurieu was approved as a separate region during 2001, although the first wine grapes were planted in 1853 & the region has been described by internationally renowned John Gladstone as having what appears to be the best climate in mainland South Australia for making table wines.
In 1989, Jerry White close planted 50 acres of vines in an East to West direction, rather than the normal North to South, to reduce vine damage from the prevailing West South West winds, & assisted drying after rainfalls, helping to prevent disease, assisting organic management. The regions climatic advantage is the strong maritime influences, which result in greater humidity & moderate temperature fluctuations, unlike areas further east & inland, resulting in classic cool climate styles expected from 320 metres above sea level.
The winemaking takes place at a couple of small wineries in McLaren Vale & is overseen by Tom White and Joe Barritt. The reds are all matured in 100% French Oak while the whites are fermented in stainless steel to maintain fruit freshness. All wines are produced with the aim of showing the true “terroir” of the vineyard site & vintage variances so that each wine is a true representation of the climatic conditions of that specific vintage.
